Barron Collier High School
News Release !
A recent education report released in Newsweek magazine ranks Barron Collier High School on its 2007 Top of the Class list of the top 1,300 high schools nationwide. The school placed 484th on the list that has been ranking public high schools according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews, since 2003. And even though the Top of the Class list shows only 1,300 schools, according to Barron Collier Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Instruction Carl DeFurio, “the Mathews survey actually consists of approximately 28,000 schools.” The top 1,300 reflects the uppermost 5 percent of all public high schools.
Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2006 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000; they are in the top 5 percent of public schools measured this way.
Mathews’ ratio is the number of advanced placement, International Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by students at a school divided by the number of graduating seniors. Students at Barron Collier took advanced placement exams, administered by the College Board. If a student scores high enough on the test, they may even earn college credit.
