FAQs:
Why study History? We as a country need to know from what direction we have come. Possessing this knowledge will help our future leaders understand how we arrived in our current day situation. By observing the cause and effects of decision made throughout our country’s History we prepare ourselves for situations in the future. Without the perspective of the past the future can seem very overwhelming. Having the Constitution as a framework to base our decisions on allows us the freedom to make decisions. The other option is to watch our great nation crumbling under the pressure of making foundless decisions and arriving at arbitrary conclusions.
Is your entire class a power point presentation? Yes it is. I have found by having the information appear on a screen in front of the class I am allowed to bring into the classroom historical facts and pictures I would otherwise be unable to use. Students will have a name and a face or some other illustration of what we are talking about and learning about. Writing on the board or having them simply read about a topic is limited. While the students copy I am discussing and explaining various angles of the events making my class a learning EXPERIENCE… Not a learning download of facts! The power point writing is neat and legible and always the same… no worries about what you missed if you were absent... I can print you a copy of the notes as exactly what everyone else in the class learned!
Can History be fun? Definitely! I use current day illustrations to bring home historical context to my students. By relating historical events to current day problems the students will leave my class with an understanding of how and why a person acted and behaved the way they did… right or wrong the ability to understand and construct your own opinions of an event based on fact is my ultimate goal for my students! Evaluation and synthesizing information by themselves, in their own minds and for their benefit!
