Ms. Katie Ross

E-mail:rosska@http://collier.k12.fl.us/nhs/faculty.html

Personal Information:

My teaching career has covered almost 30 years. During those years I have taught inner city youth in New York as well as a reading consultant in Connecticut.

For nearly 18 years I have taught in the Collier County schools. Currently, I teach various reading courses at Naples High School. Over the course of a year, I teach grades 9-12.

I earned a B.A. Degree in History at Western Connecticut University, a Master of Science Degree in Reading –K-12 and a Master of Education at the University of South Florida.

For the last 20 years I have lived in Florida. I have lived in Naples for 10 years.  I have a son and a daughter who are “real” Florida natives.

Courses:

The courses that I teach are Intensive Reading (1000410) and Adv. Reading (1008320R)

Syllabus:

The students assigned to Intensive Reading work on the basic skills needed to improve their reading skills.  This class provides a chance for students who are below grade level in reading to practice such skills as: main idea, drawing conclusions, making inferences, fact and opinion and recognizing details.  The aim of this class is to not only help students increase their reading levels for classes and the state assessment (FCAT), but also to create life long readers.

The Advanced Reading (S.A.T./A.C.T.) Class is geared for the college-bound student who needs to work on the interpretive and analytical reading skills needed for success in college.  The students work on the following skills:  test strategies for the college entrance tests, advanced comprehension skills, college level vocabulary and college level study skills and planning.

Classroom, Homework and Attendance Policies:

You can find me in Building 11 Room 207(11-207).  All parents are invited to come to visit my classroom.  I use the state grading scale and expect my students to do outside reading work.

All students in the Intensive Reading classes are required to read for at least 30 minutes every day plus any homework that I assign for that day. If we finish all the class work for the day, then the students must read for 30 minutes or more as a standing homework assignment.  In other words, there is always reading work for Ms. Ross.

The Advanced Reading (S.A.T./A.C.T. ) class has work every day in class whether it is comprehension work or vocabulary work.  Since these young men and women are college-bound then it is expected that they will work to improve their test strategies and research information about colleges, especially if they are in 11th grade.  This class is perfect for the student in 10th or 11th grade who wants to get a head start on test preparation, college study skills and information about colleges they are interested in attending.  This course is strictly an elective course.  The students are expected to behave well and work assiduously.

Announcements:

Please check to see that your son or daughter is reading for an hour every night. Reading takes practice.
