NHS GOLDEN APPLE NOMINEES FOR 2009-10
From the Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Program's Class of 60, the 2009-10 Teachers of Distinction were announced today and will continue in the Golden Apple selection process. The teachers were notified in surprise classroom visits to their schools earlier today. Congratulations goes out to NHS teachers Jean Lorenz (Teacher of Distinction) and Chelon Benitoa-Perez (Class of 60).
"We congratulate this year's Teachers of Distinction on their recognition, and thank them and their colleagues in the Class of 60 for the opportunity to visit their classrooms," states Trish Biebricher, 2009-10 Golden Apple Chair.
Six of the Teachers of Distinction will eventually be selected to receive a Golden Apple and will be honored at the 20th Annual Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Celebration at the Philharmonic Center for the Arts on May 4, 2010. If you can't attend, the event will be televised live on The Education Channel, cable 99.

NHS In Top 1500 U.S. Public High Schools

For the second consecutive year, Naples High School ranks in Newsweek’s top 1500 public high schools in the country at #682. The criteria for the list include how many students take Advanced Placement exams divided by the number of graduating seniors. International Baccalaureate programs are also considered in the ranking. Two other Collier County high schools made the list: Barron Collier ranks #407 and Gulf Coast #1249. To see the entire list of top high schools, go to www.newsweek.com .
Art Button Winner

Congratulations to NHS Sophomore Rafael Vega named the winner of the Naples Museum of Art Button Design Contest. The theme of the contest was “Art can….”
The annual contest, open to students at all grade levels, is intended to promote the importance of the arts for young museum visitors. More than 300 designs were submitted for consideration. According to Jessica Wozniak, Curator for Education at the Naples Museum of Art, “We were looking for a bold, colorful design that was creative and original.” Vega’s winning design will become next year’s button given to students who visit the Museum during the 2009-10 school year.
NHS In People To People

Congratulations to Nicholas Scalora, who participated as a member of the People to People Student Ambassador Program in Europe this summer. The two-week experience is designed to promote international understanding while building leadership skills among America’s youth. Participants are interviewed and evaluated for selection as a People to People Ambassador. Founded in 1956, People to People is based on then President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s belief that if people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would countries. Says Scolara, “Being a student ambassador means that you represent Florida and the United States as a whole. I am honored to have been selected.”
Youth Leadership Collier 2009

Alison Chauvette, Carolyn Flewelling, Dillon Hazel, Gabriella Passidomo, Andrew McIntosh, and Andrew Nelson are among 30 Southwest Florida students who earned recognition from the business community as future leaders. The students were chosen by The Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Collier Foundation as members of the Youth Leadership Collier Class of 2009. Youth Leadership Collier is a six-day intensive program that begins with a weekend of team-building activities, followed by opportunities for participants to interact in daily sessions designed to give them first-hand experience in different aspects of the community. Topics include local government, health-care, business and the arts. The program first began in 2005 and is held each year at the Hilton Naples.
Outstanding Social Studies Teacher

NHS Social Studies teacher Paul Horne is this year’s high school social studies teacher chosen to represent Collier County Public Schools at the annual Florida Council for Social Studies (FCSS) conference. Each year FCSS asks school districts to select outstanding educators at the three respective levels who exemplify the best in social studies teaching. FCSS will honor these teachers at their State Conference in September at the Palm Beach Gardens Resort Hotel. Congratulations Mr. Horne!
