Vision
Naples High School’s vision supports the District's mission stated simply:
student achievement and development.
Brief History and Background
Naples High School was first established in 1928 as part of a K-12 school located on 6th Avenue North in the City of Naples. The school has existed at its current location in Naples as a Senior High School since 1960. It is located on 33 acres bordered by an established residential neighborhood to the north, US 41 to the east, and Collier County’s only large shopping mall directly across the street to the south. The school has seen two major renovations over the years. The first major renovation occurred in 1985-86 when the school’s science areas were renovated and updated, The school’s second major renovation was a comprehensive one which lasted over 2 ½ year (from 1993-96) and changed the look of the school completely. Three two story classroom buildings, a new media center building and a new cafeteria were all added during this time. The current campus layout consists of eleven free-standing buildings, with a football/soccer stadium on its east side and a softball/baseball complex on its west side. In the midst of the campus now is a recently created “green space” or “commons.” This occurred as the result of the school’s original gymnasium demolition and the erection of a new gym at the east end of campus adjacent to the football/soccer stadium. This space changes the appearance and overall openness of the campus, a welcome change for students and staff at the start of this school year. There are many memorials scattered throughout the campus recognizing students and alumni. A growing recycling effort among students, staff, and visitors to the campus is reflected by the location of containers for bottles and cans and bins for paper located in classrooms, on outside walkways and where athletic contests take place. A striking Golden Eagle sculpture adorns the front yard/south entrance of the school as does a large eagle with its wings spread in the newly constructed Hall of Fame (gym lobby) at the entrance to the gym on the north side of campus. There are signs in view for all to see in areas frequently traveled by students that state, “You will LEARN here. You will GROW here. You will AMAZE yourself here.” The landscape on campus is well maintained, and the overall look and “feel” of the campus is one of pride and pleasure. Currently, there is an air-conditioning renovation project occurring on campus affecting all of the one-story buildings on campus. This project is slated to be completed by December 2010.
Unique School Strengths 2009-2010
Naples High School is recognized as one of the top schools in the nation by Newsweek in spite of dropping from an “A” to a “C” in the Florida grading system. Overall science scores improved from 47% to 48% in spite of an overall drop among most high schools. Ninth grade attendance increased and referrals decreased as a result of the inception of a ninth grade academy for all first-year freshmen. The academy concept continues this year with teachers focused on the school-wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) plan of “P.R.O.” expecting all students to be Prepared, Respectful, and On Time each day. An assistant principal and school dean attended PBS training with a cadre of teachers where the PRO idea was created and developed. Initial response to the plan finds students making efforts to be “PRO” receiving “coupons” for the ability to purchase goods in the “PRO shop” at the end of each quarter. The principal, two assistant principals, and core subject department heads attended RTI training during the summer and are now working with the entire staff to provide appropriate interventions focused on Tier 1 students. One assistant principal is entering the District’s Preparing New Principals program and will participate in professional development session throughout the year. The principal is presenting one of those sessions. Three teachers and the principal attended the National Renaissance conference and students will begin being rewarded for positive academic performance during the first quarter of this year. As with PRO rewarding behavior, Renaissance will be ongoing in rewarding academic achievement among students. No fewer than 10 teachers participated in summer training to implement Janet Allen’s “Plugged In” curriculum and/or Springboard instruction for students in English and/or intensive reading classes. Several have also completed or are in the process of completing either their reading endorsement or their gifted endorsement to better serve the students of Naples High School. No English teachers were hired for this school year without either the reading endorsement or evidence of having begun the endorsement coursework. Co-teaching in classes with regular ed and VE students combined is occurring in all core areas. A half-time ELL SIOP is allocated to us for the first time. The school’s principal attended the Harvard Summer Leadership Institute and returned with a Theory of Action developed by she and eleven other Collier County principals to meet AYP this school year. This theory and action plan was shared with all staff and School Advisory Council members as the mantra “all means all” becomes a common theme in our School Improvement work this year. The school received the Gold, Silver, and Five Star Awards from the Florida Department of Education for its parent, student, and community involvement which will continue in the coming year. The School Advisory Council consistently has 25+ parents in attendance at its meetings, and the Academic Booster Club is growing in number. All teachers are communicating with students and parents through ANGEL, allowing interactive involvement between students and teachers and providing pertinent curriculum and classroom activity information to parents.
