Lake Trafford Elementary School Hosts Special Olympics Ceremony
February 22, 2013
Students at Lake Trafford Elementary School had an inspiring opportunity on February 22. Long-time Special Olympics athlete and motivational speaker Loretta Claiborne visited the school, sharing her story and even joining special needs students in a day of Special Olympic games.
Ms. Claiborne was born partially blind and intellectually challenged, unable to walk or talk until age 4. She is now a world-class runner and has been a Special Olympics athlete since 1970 – still competing today. In 2000, her life story was featured in Disney’s movie “The Loretta Claiborne Story.” Ms. Claiborne is a passionate advocate for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.
This special visit was made possible in collaboration with Dr. Tim Tierney of the Character and Thought Program. Dr. Tierney is also a Physical Education teacher at LTE.
