Over 300 school district staff and community members participated in an exciting STEM Conference on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at Golden Gate High School. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Participants choose from over 30 break-out sessions.
The opening keynote presenter was Reed Timmer, Chief Meteorologist and star of Storm Chasers. In 2008, Reed became the first person in history to capture High Definition video inside a tornado while filming for Discovery. Because of his extensive education in the science of meteorology, he has become one of the world's most respected experts on severe weather forecasting, safety and survival. The closing keynote speaker was Matt Monjan with Discovery Education. Matt has blended technology and education for more than 15 years in the worlds of both business and K-12 education. He speaks across the United States and Canada and has been featured at local, state and regional conferences.
Superintendent Dr. Kamela Patton says, “Because of the rapid evolution of technology, we must provide our students with the kind of STEM activities and processes that will prepare them to thrive in the world that will await them when they complete their school careers – a world much different than the one in which we live today. The STEM activities they engage in today will help our students develop the skill sets they will need in the real world of tomorrow.”
