Two Elementary Schools Run to their Goal

They made it to the finish line! Golden Gate and Mike Davis elementary school students took their final “Kids on the GO!” walk/run mile this week at the Golden Gate High School track. The “Kids on the GO!” Celebratory Final Mile Run featured more than 200 students reaching their 26.2 mile goal – something they’ve been working on for the last six weeks. All participating students received a medal as they crossed the finish line. Superintendent Dr. Kamela Patton, along with School Board Chair Roy Terry, School Board Member Julie Sprague, Sheriff Kevin Rambosk, Safe & Healthy Children’s Coalition Chair Dr. Todd Vedder, and other community representatives were on-hand to congratulate the students.

The GGE and MDE “Kids on the GO!” program was made possible in collaboration with the Safe & Healthy Children’s Coalition of Collier County. The Coalition’s mission is to engage local agencies to develop synergistic programs that address defined health and injury prevention issues involving Collier County children. The “Kids on the GO!” program is an effort to increase physical activity and decrease the threat of obesity among kids.

The Celebratory Final Mile Run event also featured the launch of the Coalition’s summer program – “Run4Fun” – to be held in Golden Gate starting on June 12, in conjunction with the Golden Gate Kiwanis Club. The free event will provide the opportunity for adults and children to participate in a structured 8-week run.
