When should I start volunteering?
The earlier, the better! If you qualify for 100% Bright Futures, you are required to complete 100 hours of community service. It is best to start volunteering as early as your 9th grade year. You don't want to wait until your senior year to get this done.
Why should I do community service hours?
To be eligible to receive one of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Awards a student must complete a program of Community Service work, as defined below, that includes a minimum of hours:
Florida Academic Scholarship – 100 hours
Florida Medallion Scholarship – 75 hours
Gold Seal Vocational – 30 hours
What counts as community service?
Community Service is defined as identifying a social issue in the community. This requires students to look beyond themselves and reach out to an issue faced by our society (i.e. poverty, abuse, elderly citizen rights).
