Reading Endorsement

  • What is the Reading Endorsement Add-On Certification program?

The Florida Department of Education (DOE) requires anyone teaching reading or providing intensive reading intervention must be certified in Reading.  A teacher can be certified through a Master's degree in Reading K-12 or by completing the Reading Endorsement program.  To be certified, the teacher must have the Reading K-12 subject area or the Reading Endorsement added to their professional certificate.

What is required to get the Reading Endorsement?

You must complete the five (5) Reading Endorsement courses.  These courses are offered free of charge to Collier County teachers.  They are:

    • NG Competency 1 – Foundations of Language and Cognition
    • NG Competency 2 – Foundations of Research Based Practices
    • NG Competency 3 – Foundations of Assessments
    • NG Competency 4 – Foundations and Application of Differentiation
    • NG Competency 5 – Practicum:  Demonstration of Accomplishment

What is the difference between the reading endorsement and the reading certification?

The Reading K-12 certification consists of 30 university course credit hours or a Master's degree in Reading and can stand alone on a teaching certificate.  The reading endorsement is a “rider” to other certifications.  A reading endorsement is made up of 15 university course credit hours (or 300 in-service points).

Teachers with the 30 hours or Master’s Degree in Reading must take the reading certification exam to earn the K-12 reading certification.

I am out-of-field in Reading.  What is required of me?

You must complete 120 in-service points (two district courses) and/or six (6) semester college credit hours of coursework in Reading each school year.  After all five (5) courses have been completed, the Reading Endorsement must be added to your teaching certificate.

How do I add the Reading Endorsement to my teaching certificate?

Apply on-line with the DOE to add the Reading Endorsement (1046/E) to your current certificate.  Submit a check or money order for $75.00 (made payable to CCPS) to the Certification Department.  Upon receipt of the check or money order, the Certification Department will submit completed in-service records to the DOE.

    Are Reading in-service points bankable?

If reading credit is earned under a five-year Professional renewable certificate, the Florida Department of Education allows the “banking” of reading credits.  Each course is worth 60 in-service points.
