What is Family Literacy?
-
Collier County Public Schools partner with families to promote children’s literacy learning in many ways.
Teachers, parents and students are provided opportunities to engage in literacy activities through school-based literacy events that are planned throughout the school year.
Volunteers and business partners are encouraged to participate in school-based literacy events.
Illiteracy is America’s Biggest Challenge!
Thirty million adults in America cannot read or write at the most basic level. Investing in family literacy is critical to the success of our families and nation.Research tells us:
- Children can be 18 months behind by the start of kindergarten.
- If children are not reading proficiently by 3rd grade, they are four times more likely to drop out of high school.
Our district family literacy initiative provides opportunities and high-quality family literacy resources to prepare children for school and help their parents improve their literacy skills.
