In this student-driven Academy, students deepen their understanding of the scientific process through hands-on experiences in the area of physics. Students work in collaborative groups to design, refine, conduct, and evaluate experiments using things like Alka-Seltzer film canister rockets. Data is recorded and analyzed with the purpose of establishing a relationship between the variable selected by the students and the distance a rocket flies. The need for controlled variables and experimental design are stressed along with consistent and accurate data collection. Students also experience the joys and frustrations of design by learning about and designing their own, working catapult. This gives students the freedom to experiment with catapult designs and to experience the relationship of design on functionality. The overall goal is to design a working catapult that will consistently launch a small object to a standard (highest, farthest). Students are encouraged to design and redesign to increase accuracy and durability.
