Career Opportunities: Students are prepared for employment in a variety of health care settings as entry level coder, medical record coder, coding technician, or coding clerks, or medical coder/biller or SOC Code 29-2071(Medical Records and Health Information Technicians).

Class Experiences
We provide you with hands on activities that keep coding interesting and interactive. Participating in games and friendly competition will help you learn medical terminology. We use models in the skills laboratory for anatomy and physiology topics.

HIM0009 – Introduction to Health Information Technology (90 hours)
This introductory course introduces foundations of the healthcare delivery system; computer and employability skills; health data concepts; functions of health records; careers in health science; the importance of privacy; ethical issues in health information.

HIM0091 – Medical Coder/Biller 1 (350 hours)
This course focuses on anatomy of the human body; medical terminology; and fundamentals of disease process in relationship to the human body, including pharmacology.

HIM0092 – Medical Coder/Biller 2 (350hours)
This course targets an understanding of ICD and CPT coding systems, both manual and automated. Students will learn about ICD coding complexities, gain experience in the use of medical coding references, and understand the significance of health information systems to the Medical Biller/Coder.

HIM0093 – Medical Coder/Biller 3 (320 hours)
In the final course, students will demonstrate ethical and legal principles with regard to the use of medical records. The student will be able to demonstrate understanding of medical billing and explain the importance of maintaining ethical and legal standards in compiling and using medical records; demonstrate ethical coding as outlined by AHIMA, complete an HCFA 1500 or comparable claim form, and effectively use medical billing software. Internship opportunities are available to students who maintain required grade, attendance and competency levels.

Specific Admissions Requirements:
- Proof of current Immunizations and Tuberculosis Screening
- Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) - Level 2 Background Check and Drug Screen, per iTECH policy. This policy is available upon request.
- Students must maintain an 80% academic grade average and attend at least 90% of scheduled class.
DOE Basic Skills Exit Requirements: Reading 11, *Math 9, Language 11 (unless exempt)
*Basic Skills exempt students with Math scores below 9 will be required to complete the iTECH Medical Math Practice Packet and be tested.

This program offers a foundation of knowledge and skills to prepare students for employment as a Medical Biller or a Certified Medical Coder.

There are potential internship opportunities for students who qualify.
Workforce Education Internship Program
Students participate in work-based learning experiences in their field of study outside of the classroom. ITECH has a Workforce Internship Program for those students who need work experience, but do not have an out-of-school job.
Job Placement
Our competent counseling staff provides job postings on a daily basis, with help in resume writing and the interviewing process.

A certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete the program’s competencies and satisfy basic skill requirements in accordance with state guidelines. Following program completion, the student is eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam with the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC).
