Debate Club
Purpose and Nature:
-
The purpose of middle school and high school debate is to provide students with an opportunity to explore local and global issues through a structured exchange of ideas. Students research, draft, and present speeches in a manner that also allows for a constructive clash of ideas with other students. As most schools do not offer Debate courses, the development of these skills is done through an afterschool program. Through Debate students gain multiple skills that they carry with them into adulthood: public speaking, non-verbal communication, current event analysis, constructive criticism, ethos, pathos, and logos, among many others.

Any student may represent their class at weekly S.G.A. meetings as a Class Representative however Class Representatives are unable to vote on issues and motions that are presented at meetings.

S.G.A. meets weekly to discuss and address issues of campus concern. Unless otherwise noted, weekly meetings are open to all students and other members of the High School community. All students are encouraged to attend S.G.A.’s weekly meetings, to voice opinions, or to listen and observe.
S.G.A. is conducted by the S.G.A. President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer all of whom are elected by students. The S.G.A.
