June 2013 The Collier County Public Schools’ video "Lesson Learned: Barricading Saves Lives" was the recipient of a first-place Sunshine Medallion Award, being judged best in the State of Florida in the Crisis Communication / School Safety category. The video also won a prestigious Best of Show designation chosen from the field of 19 award winners. The awards were presented by the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) during the Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) annual Summer Conference held in Tampa in June, 2013. The district, in collaboration with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, produced a safety video for employees following the Sandy Hook tragedy. To drive home a lesson learned from the Virginia Tech shooting, the video included a segment showing an actor (sheriff’s deputy) playing the role of a “school shooter” being slowed or stopped by the barricading of a classroom door.

The award was accepted by Ms. Maribel De Armas, Communications Specialist, pictured here with SUNSPRA Treasurer, Leah Lauderdale.The CCPS Tutoring-Enhancing Student Achievement promotion earned a first-place Sunshine Medallion Award in the Themed Promotion category from the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) during the Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) annual Summer Conference held in Tampa in June, 2013. The poster board and flyer used to promote a program which offered no-charge tutoring to students at Title 1 schools who scored at level one or two on FCAT. The objective: to create and maintain a teacher-guided instructional program focused on the advancement and engagement of students. June 2012The Collier County Public Schools’ website was the recipient of a first-place Sunshine Medallion Award, being judged best school district website in the State of Florida in the Publications and PR Tools category for the second year in a row. The district website also won a prestigious Best of Show designation chosen from the field of 20 award winners. The awards were presented by the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) during the Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) annual Summer Conference held in Tampa in June, 2012. The Collier School’s website is home to more than 100,000 pages of information. Over the last year, the site was expanded in an effort to improve communication and engage the district’s diverse community.

The one-page Report to the Community provided a snapshot of our school district, including: “Quick Facts” providing demographics illustrating the district-wide reach within our diverse community; the “Way of Work” governance model outlining the roles of the School Board and Superintendent regarding how they engage the community to achieve the district’s shared vision and mission; and the Superintendent’s priorities for excellence in education, following the thematic concept of four pillars (finance, human capital, community, and communications) supporting the top priority of student achievement. The district's "Engaging our Students and the Community Career Academy" video earned a first-place Sunshine Medallion Award from the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) in the Promotional Video category. In an effort to create and ultimately increase awareness among students and parents of students in our high school career academies, and specifically the Lely High School Construction Career Academy, a television news package was developed and produced by the staff of the district’s Communications and Community Engagement Department for The Education Channel, Comcast cable 99. The package is also posted on the school district website and on the district’s Career and Technical Education website.

Over the last year, the site was enhanced in an effort to improve communication and engage the district’s diverse community. Class Act, a Collier County Public School’s television show, was the recipient of a 2011 Sunshine Medallion Award in the Broadcast TV category being judged best Broadcast TV show in the Medium District category in the State of Florida. The award was presented by the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) during a Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) conference held in Orlando in July, 2011. Class Act is a biweekly TV show that shares teacher best practices. The program allows other teachers, or any viewer for that matter, to sit in on a classroom lesson that has been videotaped in its entirety.

Joe Landon, Executive Director/Communications Services, accepts the award from SUNSPRA President Dylan Thomas.Open Mic – Open Dialogue, a School District of Collier County live TV panel discussion/call-in show, was the recipient of a 2009 Sunshine Medallion Award in the Broadcast TV category being judged best Broadcast TV show in the State of Florida. The award was presented by the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) during a Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) conference held in Orlando in July, 2010. The show is not airing on the The Education Channel at the current time.
July 2008The School District of Collier County’s Open Mic TV call-in show was judged best television show in the State of Florida by the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA). Open Mic won a first place Sunshine Medallion Award in the Broadcast TV category. Open Mic earned “Best of Show” awards competition honors as well. The awards were presented by Florida’s Chancellor of Education, Frances Haithcock, during a Florida Association of School Administrators conference in Naples.

Joe Landon, Executive Director of Communications Services, and Leanne Zinser, Supervisor of Communications Services, accept the award.Storytime, a nightly read aloud television program produced by the School District of Collier County Communication & Information Office, was recognized by the Sunshine State School Public Relations Association (SUNSPRA) with a Sunshine Medallion Award. The recognition, a first-place statewide award, was given in the Broadcast – Medium District category. The award was presented during a SUNSPRA awards celebration held in St. Petersburg.
