Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS):
PBIS is the application of evidence-based strategies and systems to assist schools to improve academic performance, decrease problem behavior and establish positive school cultures. PBIS gives people a new way to think about behavior and is based on understanding why problem behaviors occur. This approach to behavior can occur on a school-wide level, in a specific setting, classroom, or with an individual student. School-wide PBIS requires a collaborative team consisting of administrators, teachers, support personnel, behavior specialist, and parents. All schools in Collier County, as well as the transportation department, implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Support.
What are some of the benefits of PBIS?
- Increased capacity of school staff to address classroom behavior problems
- Reduced number of office referrals for problem behavior
- Reduced need for disciplinary exclusions.
- Positive school culture
- Increased time for academic engagement
- Increased attendance rates
During the previous school year, 40 schools were designated as PBIS Model Schools. A PBS Model School is one that has met specific criteria and has demonstrated innovative, creative, and functional ways of supporting PBS in their respective school.
