• The elementary literacy program is based on a continuum of literacy learning.  Students learn about the relationships of letters to sounds as well as the structure of words to help them in reading and spelling.  They also engage in discussions with one another and with the teacher about texts that have been read aloud or independently to expand content knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of the texts.  Students also extend their understanding of texts through a variety of writing tasks.  Our elementary students compose and write for a variety of purposes and audiences during literacy instruction and across the curriculum.  Students present their ideas through oral discussion and presentation or through the use of technology.  Small group explicit instruction is also provided to support students in the reading of increasingly challenging texts with accuracy, understanding, and fluency.

    Our Mission
The goal of the elementary literacy department is to help young students develop critical literacy skills and to provide multiple opportunities for students to engage with quality literary and informational texts.
