Language and communication are at the heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are equipped linguistically and culturally to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language. (Standards, 1996, p. 7) In order to be competitive and successful students in a multilingual and multicultural society, Collier County Schools offer a broad spectrum of second language learning opportunities starting at the middle school level. A variety of world language courses offer opportunities for our students to gain proficiency in speaking, comprehension, reading, writing, and culture.
