Beacon High School Overview
-
Beacon High School (BHS) is designed to provide students with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma through a non-traditional approach. The staff includes a high school counselor, teachers for each of the core subject areas (math, English, social studies, and science), ESE certified teachers, and a general assistant. Although one of the strengths of the program is flexibility, in that it allows students to work at their own pace and wherever the internet is available, students are required to report to Beacon High in-person, as is outlined in the Student Attendance section.
Mission
-
The goal of Beacon High School is to provide an alternative route for students who have not been successful in the traditional school setting. Students are encouraged to reclaim responsibility and become an active participant in their educational experience.
Student Eligibility
-
To be eligible for admission into Beacon High School, a student must be in grades 11-12. Students are typically behind their cohort group or unable to graduate on time. They may be at-risk of dropping out of school due to lack of interest in school, low achieving test scores, high absenteeism (causing credits to be withheld), low GPA issues, etc.The Beacon High School program is not used to accelerate or to graduate early. The purpose of BHS is to help students earn and/or make up credits that they need to graduate with their cohort class.
Parental Involvement
-
Parents are an integral part of the success of any academic program. In order to facilitate a close working relationship among parents, students, and staff, the following will occur:
- The parent/guardian and the student will meet with the school counselor
- Both parent and student will receive instruction on how to access the student's online coursework
- The counselor will give the student a graduation plan to follow (also provided to the parent)
- A mentor teacher will be assigned to each student. This teacher will be responsible for notifying the parent if the student falls behind schedule.
