Community Collaboration Provides ECG Screenings for Students
CCPS is happy to share that, through an incredible community collaboration, more than 812 Electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings have been provided to upcoming ninth-grade students.
This initiative is in preparation for Florida’s new “Second Chance Act,” which will require ECG screenings beginning July 1, 2026, for:
- All incoming ninth-grade student-athletes for the 2026-2027 school year
- Any student in grades 10-12 who have never participated in an FHSAA-sanctioned sport
Over the past several months, families were encouraged to first contact their pediatricians or family physicians to determine whether ECG screenings were available through their offices. For families whose physicians were unable to provide the screenings, CCPS, in collaboration with Who We Play For, offered screenings at no cost for eighth-grade students entering ninth grade in August 2026 who plan to participate in sports. Parents were notified in advance, and registration was required for participation.
For students who still need ECG screenings, we will continue working with our middle and high schools to help provide access to these screenings.
This initiative, which helps identify potentially undetected cardiac risk factors and enhance student-athlete safety, was made possible by the Van Domelen Institute for Women & Children (a collaboration between NCH and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital), Who We Play For, Collier EMS, North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District, Greater Naples Fire Rescue District, Immokalee Fire Control District, City of Naples Fire Department, and Collier County Public Schools.
