What are some key points in House Bill 7029?

  • Preferential treatment shall be given to:
    • Dependent children of active duty military personnel whose move resulted from military orders
    • Children who have been relocated due to a foster care placement in a different school zone
    • Children who move due to a court-ordered change in custody due to separation or divorce, or the serious illness or death of a custodial parent
    • Students residing in the District
  • Identify schools which have not reached capacity and post on the District’s website
  • Once approved:
    • students may remain at the school chosen until the highest grade at that level
      • parents will no longer be required to reapply each year (until a change in level occurs, ie., elementary to middle, or middle to high)
    • students are permitted to participate in athletics unless they participated in the sport at another school during that year (exceptions are made for students who moved because of military, foster care, or court-ordered change in custody).
