Parent-Coach Communication Guidelines

Clear and respectful communication between parents and coaches is essential to providing a positive experience for all student-athletes. The following guidelines are designed to help set appropriate expectations and maintain a healthy environment for our athletic programs.

Topics Appropriate to Discuss with Coaches

Parents are encouraged to communicate with coaches regarding the following:

Concerns about their child’s physical and mental well-being
Ways to support their child’s development and improvement
Questions about team expectations, policies, and procedures
Notification of schedule conflicts, absences, or academic concerns
General questions about program philosophy and athlete development

Topics Not Appropriate to Discuss with Coaches

To ensure fairness and team cohesion, the following topics are not appropriate for parent–coach discussions:

Playing time or team selection decisions
Strategy, play calling, or game tactics
Other student-athletes
Coaching decisions made during competitions

Communication Expectations

Student-athletes are encouraged to communicate directly with their coach first regarding concerns
Parents should allow 24 hours after a contest before addressing concerns with a coach
Meetings should be scheduled in advance; avoid approaching coaches before or immediately after contests
Communication should remain respectful and focused on the well-being of the student-athlete

Chain of Communication

If a concern is not resolved after speaking with the coach, the following steps should be followed:

Student-athlete meets with the coach
Parent and student-athlete request a meeting with the coach
Contact the school’s Athletic Director
School administration (if necessary)

Sportsmanship

FUNDAMENTALS OF SPORTSMANSHIP

Show respect for the opponent at all times. The opponent should be treated as a guest, greeted cordially upon arrival, given the best accommodations possible, and accorded the tolerance, honesty and generosity that all human beings deserve. Good sportsmanship is the Golden Rule in action.
Show respect for the officials. The officials should be recognized as impartial arbitrators who are trained to do their job and who can be expected to do it to the best of their ability. Good sportsmanship implies the willingness to accept and abide by the decisions of the officials.
Know, understand, and appreciate the rules of the contest. A familiarity with the current rules of the game and the recognition of their necessity for a fair contest are essential. Good sportsmanship suggests the importance of conforming to the spirit as well as the letter of the rules.
Maintain self-control at all times. A prerequisite of good sportsmanship requires one to understand his own bias or prejudice and to have the ability to recognize that rational bel1avior is more important than the desire to win. A proper perspective must be maintained if the potential educational values of athletic competition are to be realized. Good sportsmanship is concerned with the behavior of all involved in the game.
Recognize and appreciate skill in performance regardless of affiliation. Applause for an opponent's good performance is a demonstration of generosity and goodwill that should not be looked upon as treason. The ability to recognize quality in performance and the willingness to acknowledge it without regard to team membership is one of the most highly commendable gestures of good sportsmanship.

PARENTAL OATH OF SPORTSMANSHIP

If needed we have a form for parents to sign taking an oath of sportsmanship during your athletic contests. The form is location in the form section of this manual. (See Appendix)

PARENT AND SPECTATOR CONDUCT
One mission of the Collier County Public Schools athletic programs is to teach appropriate conduct to our student-athletes and to reinforce values relating to wholesome competition, good sportsmanship, and fair play. It is our expectation that spectators assist in this goal by exhibiting appropriate behavior at all athletic events. Often spectators fail to remember the primary role of interscholastic athletics is to prepare students to be good citizens, become better adults, learn new skills, and have fun! Spectators must act as role models of sportsmanship for all athletes and promote a healthy perception of success.

SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SPORTS EVENTS
Our goal is to provide a safe environment for all those involved (players, coaches, and spectators) and to preserve the integrity of the contest.

All participants/spectators are expected to exhibit good behavior (sportsmanship) at all sports events.
- Respect athletes, coaches, officials and fellow spectators
- Refrain from taunting, booing, heckling, and the use of profanity
- Respect decisions made by contest officials
- Attendance at athletic contests is not a license to be obnoxious or to verbally abuse others
- Leaving a contest prior to its conclusion, with expectations of returning, is not permitted
CCPS may impose the following penalties for violating these expectations:
- Immediate eviction from the event.
- Ban from future contests.
- Ban from all PCPS events.
CCPS also reserves the right to take the following action to preserve the safety and integrity of a contest:
- Student suspended from participating in a contest.
- Student dismissal from team.
CCPS is not in the practice of enforcing a court ordered Temporary Restraining Order (TRO). It is the responsibility of the parties involved to contact the police and have the TRO enforced. Parents should be aware that if student-athlete(s) are involved in a TRO against member(s) of the opposing team the following action may be taken by the police:
- Removal of one of the parties from the event.
- Removal of both parties from the event.
If the dispute causes (or may cause) a significant disturbance or safety risk the game may be:
- Terminated and not rescheduled.
- Played at a secured sight with no spectators.

LET THE PLAYERS PLAY. LET THE COACHES COACH. LET THE OFFICALS OFFICIATE. LET THE SPECTATORS BE POSITIVE.

Eligibility Requirements

High School

Things you need to know about your eligibility:

Participation in athletics is a privilege, NOT a right. (Bylaw 9.1.1)
If you falsify enrollment or eligibility documents, you could be deemed ineligible for 365 days. (Bylaw 9.1.2.2)
If you transfer after starting a sport, including tryouts, you must meet one of the transfer regulations to continue playing the sport at your new school. (Bylaw 9.3.2.2)
After transferring, you must wait until your 6th day of attendance at your new school before you can participate in a contest. (Bylaw 9.3.3)
You must have a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale during the previous semester. (Bylaw 9.4.1)
You must have been in school and received grades during the previous two consecutive semesters. (Bylaw 9.4.1.3)
You get 8 consecutive semesters of eligibility from the date you first enter 9th grade. If you reach a 5th year of high school, you will be ineligible that year. (Bylaw 9.5.1)
You must not turn 19 prior to July 1st. (Bylaw 9.6.1)
You must provide a completed EL2 Form - preparticipation physical evaluation - and be cleared for participation. (Bylaw 9.7.1)
You must provide a completed EL3 Form - consent and release from liability certificate - and have permission from your parents to participate. (Bylaw 9.8.1)
You must maintain your status as an amateur. Any NIL activities must be compliant with FHSAA Bylaw 9.9.4. (Bylaw 9.9)
If you accept an impermissible benefit, you could be deemed ineligible for one or more years from the date of discovery. (Policy 36.5.2)

Middle School

Things you need to know about your eligibility:

You get one year of eligibility in each grade level. If you repeat the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, you will be ineligible at all levels during your repeat year. (Bylaw 9.5.2)
You must not turn 15 prior to July 1st to participate at the middle school level. (Bylaw 9.6.3)
You must provide a completed EL2 Form - preparticipation physical evaluation - and be cleared for participation. (Bylaw 9.7.1)
You must provide a completed EL3 Form - consent and release from liability certificate - and have permission from your parents to participate. (Bylaw 9.8.1)

Other

Home-Schooled, Full-Time Virtual, or Charter Students:
If Home Schools, Full Time Virtual, or Charter School (Charters with No Athletic Team) students wish to participate in sports at the public high school they are zoned for, the parents must notify the principal and/or the athletic director. All FHSAA paperwork and eligibility requirements must also be completed before the students can begin any activities associated with that team. View the practice start dates below.

If home-schooled, full-time virtual school, or charter school (charters with no athletic teams) students wish to participate in sports at another public school other than their zoned school, parents must complete the district controlled
open enrollment form for participation only. This form will only be available during the district-approved time period; no other applications after the deadline will be considered or approved.

Private School Students:
If private school students, who attend a private school that is not a member of the FHSAA and has 2OO or few er students in grades 6-12, wish to participate in sports at the public high school they are zoned for, the parents must notify the principal and/or athletic director BEFORE the first day of practice for that sport in order to be eligible to participate in that sport. All FHSAA paperwork and eligibility requirements must also be completed before the students can begin any activities associated with that team.

If private school students, who attend a private school that is not a member of the FHSAA and has 200 or fewer students in grades 6-12, wish to participate in sports at another public school other than their zoned school, parents must complete the district controlled open enrollment form for participation only.

This form will only be available during the district-approved time period; no other applications after the deadline will be considered or approved.

Medical Insurance

NIL - Name, Image, and Likeness

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) recognizes the importance of n1aintaining amateurism in high school athletics. Compliance with this bylaw does not ensure maintenance of eligibility standards of other athletic associations, such as, but not limited to, the National Collegiate Athletic ,6.ssociation (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), or the governing body for a particular sport. Student-athletes are encouraged to communicate with those organizations to ensure any activity associated with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) complies with eligibility standards. Student-athletes and their families are encouraged to seek legal counsel and tax advice when considering NIL activity.

Recruiting - How to Report

"Athletic recruiting" is any effort by a school employee, athletic department staff member or representative of a school's athletic interests to pressure, urge or entice a student to attend that school for the purpose of participating in interscholastic athletics.
Representative of a School's Athletic Interests. "Representative of a school's athletic interests" refers to any independent person, business or organization that participates in, assists with and/or promotes that school's interscholastic athletic program.

This includes:

A student-athlete or other student participant in the athletic program at that school;
The parents, guardians or other family members of a student-athlete or other student participant in the athletic program at that school;
Immediate relatives of a coach or other member of the athletic department staff at that school;
A volunteer with that school's athletic program;
A member of an athletic booster organization of that school;
A person, business or organization that makes financial or in-kind contributions to the athletic department or that is otherwise involved in promoting the school's interscholastic athletic program

Any violation of FHSAA recruiting bylaws should be reported to your current High School Athletic Director as soon as possible.

Click Create an Account
- You only need ONE account, even if you have children in more than one high school and/or junior high
- Do not create another account if you have used Register My Athlete/Aktivate in the past
Fill in your personal account information. You will be using the site as a Parent/Guardian.
Click Create Account
Shortly after creating your account, you will receive an email with a 6-digit Verification Code. Use this code to verify your account when prompted.
- Do not close your current tab. You will need to open your email in another tab and find the verification email in your email inbox (it may take a few minutes to appear, so be patient).

STEP 2: Register Your Student for an Activity

Login with your email address and password
Under the Parents header, click the button labeled Click here to start/complete athlete registrations
Click Start/Complete Registrations under "What would you like to do?"
Click the New Registration + button in the upper right hand corner
Start by clicking the red Select School bar and follow the directions as they appear
Continue following the steps presented in the red bars

All Collier County student-athletes and their families have access to an HONEST GAME account.

Honest Game empowers student-athletes and their families with the expertise and confidence needed to navigate NCAA and NAIA academic eligibility. Regardless of a student’s post-secondary pathway, the Honest Game platform provides students with real-time status updates and harnesses a student-athlete’s passion for sports to fuel their motivation for learning.

Starting freshman year, each student will receive an online individualized College Athletic Report on Eligibility (CARE®), which transforms the student-athlete’s transcript into a personal plan, including strategic individualized guidance and short-term goals to achieve and maintain academic eligibility.

Consent & Release

Student must provide school with signed consent and release form to participate. A student must have the consent of his/her parent(s) or legal guardian(s) to participate in interscholastic athletic programs at a member school prior to participating in interscholastic athletic competition or engaging in any practice, tryout, workout, or other physical activity associated with the student's candidacy for an interscholastic team. The student and his/her parent(s) or legal guardian(s) must also release the FHSAA, its member schools and contest officials from all liability for any injury or claim that may result from the student's participation in interscholastic athletics. This consent and release from liability must be provided in writing on a form developed by this Association for that purpose. The form must be signed by the student and his/her parent(s) or legal guardian(s). The student cannot be allowed to participate in any activity related to interscholastic athletic programs until the fully executed consent form is on file in the school.

Parents should contact the school athletic director to determine if special arrangements have been made for athletic physical exams by local physicians or medical facilities before making an appointment with their family physician

These forms are required by the FHSAA before a student-athlete can participate in any type of conditioning, workout, practices or contests. These forms contain additional statements that are specific to Collier County Public Schools and require the signatures of the parent/guardian and student-athlete.

Pre-Participation Physical Examination

A student must have a physical evaluation each year and be certified as being physically fit to participate in interscholastic athletic programs prior to participating in interscholastic athletic competition or engaging in any practice, tryout, workout, or other physical activity associated with the student's candidacy for an interscholastic team. The student cannot be allowed to participate in any activity related to interscholastic athletic programs until the fully executed physical evaluation form is on file in the school(§ 1002.20(17)(b), F.S.).
