Understanding the Bullying Triad

BULLIES:

  • find it difficult to see things from someone else's perspective
  • lack empathy
  • have a strong need to dominate and control
  • are willing to use others to get what they want
  • have difficulty accepting adult authority

VICTIMS:

  • tend to be afraid, anxious, unsure of themselves, and mistrusting
  • have difficulty in social situations
  • perform poorly in school
  • rarely ask adults for help - may feel like adults will not care or understand
  • are afraid bullying will worsen if they tell - may fear being seen as a tattletale or snitch

BYSTANDERS:

  • witness bullying and do nothing
  • upstanders witness bullying, empathize with the victim, and act by confronting the bully or by reporting the behavior to an adult
