Parental Choice (Out-of-Zone/School Choice)

  • Parental Choice applications must be received by June 30 of an open Parental Choice window, with the exception of students who are enrolling in the District for the first time. No Parental Choice applications will be approved for the current school year.
     
  • The Department of Student Assignment will review a parent's application to determine whether it qualifies as Out-of-Zone or School Choice based on the information provided.
     
  • Approvals are subject to capacity and class-size restrictions.
     
  • Transportation is not provided by the District.

Out-of-Zone under Parental Choice is for parents or legal guardians with documented needs or hardships as listed in Board Policy 5120. 

School Choice under Parental Choice is for parents or legal guardians exercising Choice without respect to or limitations upon their reasons.

Family Empowerment Scholarship (formerly McKay)

The Family Empowerment Scholarship (FES) is a State of Florida School Choice program for students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or an approved medical diagnosis.

  • Students with disabilities not able to be accommodated at their zoned school will be placed at a school with availability to accommodate by the Department of Exceptional Student Education after evaluation. 
  • Students with disabilities able to be accommodated at their zoned school but prefer to attend an out of zone school will be considered as a School Choice and will be subjected to school choice policies.
