CCPS Weather Communication Plan
As we enter the traditional peak of hurricane season, we would like to be proactive and share how CCPS plans to communicate in the event of a severe weather emergency.
As we enter the traditional peak of hurricane season, I want to share how Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) prepares for and communicates about severe weather. Our goal is simple: to keep you informed with clear, timely, and trusted updates that prioritize safety and minimize disruption.
Environmental conditions are monitored daily by district and school leaders. Every CCPS school is equipped with weather radios, lightning prediction alerts, and severe weather warning systems. Weather impacts can vary significantly across our region. We encourage families to rely on CCPS communications for the most accurate and relevant updates affecting our schools.
Although CCPS is ultimately responsible for day-to-day school operations, weather-related decisions relating to school closures are made in partnership with other agencies. We rely on guidance from the National Weather Service in Miami, the National Hurricane Center, Collier County Emergency Management, Collier County Sheriff’s Office, and local Fire Rescue Districts to help us make the best possible decisions for our students, staff, and families.
Some key factors that are considered when closing schools include, but are not limited to, the health and safety of students and staff, road conditions (sustained winds more than 35 mph prevent safe bus operation), use of schools as shelters, and the status of our facilities.
We must communicate school closures to the Florida Department of Education, which requires a specific amount of instructional time as determined by Florida law. Every closure or delay must balance safety with our responsibility to maintain learning continuity.
