Debate
Purpose and Nature:
- The purpose of middle school and high school debate is to provide students with an opportunity to explore local and global issues through a structured exchange of ideas. Students research, draft, and present speeches in a manner that also allows for a constructive clash of ideas with other students. As most schools do not offer Debate courses, the development of these skills is done through an afterschool program. Through Debate students gain multiple skills that they carry with them into adulthood: public speaking, non-verbal communication, current event analysis, constructive criticism, ethos, pathos, and logos, among many others.
