To the Class of 2020,
It is with a heavy heart that I write this message for all of you in the Class of 2020. I cannot imagine all of the thoughts and feelings that each of you are experiencing during this unprecedented time. COVID-19 (Coronavirus), has led to the modification or cancellation of the spring schedule, including many hallmark moments of the high school experience. As a school, we recognize graduation as the culmination of a student’s academic journey and a time to celebrate with family and friends. Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) also has an emotional investment in making sure our seniors are honored and celebrated. The act of walking across the graduation stage is unmistakably meaningful to all of us: students, their families, school and District staff, and the community. Given the state of our county and country, we recognize traditional commencement ceremonies will not happen on May 29 as previously planned.
In the email you received earlier today from the District, we are going to hold a Virtual Graduation Ceremony with the hopes of a second in-person ceremony on July 24th at 8:00 am in our football stadium if weather and safety guidelines for the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) allow.
To accomplish this Virtual Ceremony, we will be completing the following activities:
The Distribution of Cap and Gowns: Monday, May 4th from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Seniors with last names beginning with A – D: 9:00 am – 10:00 am
Seniors with last names beginning with E – H: 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Seniors with last names beginning with I – M: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Seniors with last names beginning with N – R: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Seniors with last names beginning with S – V: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Seniors with last names beginning with W – Z: 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
When seniors arrive on campus, we will direct them through our parking lot to make stops for both drop off and pick up of materials. All students are to remain in their cars while they are on campus. Please see the attached map to give you an idea of where each stop will occur.
Stop 1: Seniors will enter the campus through the main gate by the bus circle and drive west down the main road that runs parallel with Immokalee Road and our main fence line. When you get to the first stop near the main ticket booth at our football stadium, each senior will receive a Graduate Yard Sign as well as a sign with your name on it to place on your dashboard.
Stop 2: Seniors will drive in front of our football stadium and there will be a stop for any student to drop off any sporting equipment (uniforms, gear, etc.). If you do not have any, simply let the people know and continue on to the third stop.
Stop 3: Seniors will then drive to the front of buildings 2/3, (near the media center) and there will be a stop for any student that needs to turn in any books (library or school, including Dual Enrollment textbooks). We will have additional days for book drop-off after the seniors last day of May 15th.
Stop 4: Seniors will then drive around the loop near the flag poles at the front of the school to receive their cap & gown. Please make sure to open up your cap & gown when you get home to make sure that it is the correct size. Graduation cords and National Honor Society stoles will be handed out prior to the Virtual Graduation Photo on May 11th and 12th.
Stop 5: Seniors will then drive by the front of building 8 where they can turn in any District-owned instrument, if possible. Again, we will have another drop off date after the seniors last day of May 15th.
Stop 6: Seniors will finally drive through the bus loop where there will be a stop to give students any of their personal belongings that may have been left inside of their school issued locker.
Students will then drive around the bus loop and exit campus at the light.
Directions for Virtual Graduation Photo on May 11th and 12th in the GCHS Auditorium
A detailed email with all plans for individual pictures will be sent out by this Friday, May 1st. All eligible seniors will receive graduation cords and National Honor Society stoles prior to taking their picture. We will be adhering to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guidelines as well as practicing social distancing during the picture taking process.
Our office staff is in the process of verifying physical addresses of all seniors who have purchased a yearbook before Saturday, April 25th. Our yearbook company will be directly shipping yearbooks to your homes. Any yearbooks that are purchased after that date will be delivered to Gulf Coast directly. Once the yearbooks are received, we will call students and let them know to come by the school to pick them up.
Student diploma pickup will follow the same procedures as cap and gown pickup. The date will be forthcoming.
I realize that there is a lot of information in this message and I want to thank you for your patience. We look forward to making this important event memorable for you and your family.
