WHAT IS PARENTAL CHOICE?
Posted by:Parental Choice allows parents, under specified conditions, to request another school of enrollment outside of their geographic zones. Options include Out-of-Zone, School Choice.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN OUT-OF-ZONE, SCHOOL CHOICE, FAMILY EMPOWERMENT SCHOLARSHIPS?
Posted by:Out-of-Zone requests under Parental Choice are for parents or legal guardians with documented needs or hardships as listed in Board Policy 5120.
- Priority window is January 18, 2024 through February 26, 2024
- Applications must be received by June 30th, with the exception of students who are enrolling in the District for the first time, no Out-of-Zone applications will be approved for the current school year
- Approvals are subject to capacity and class-size restrictions
- Out-of-Zone applications submitted during the priority window shall take priority over School Choice applications
- Transportation is not provided by the District
School Choice requests under Parental Choice are for parents or legal guardians exercising Choice without respect to or limitations upon their reasons.
- Priority window is January 18, 2024 through February 26, 2024
- Applications must be received by June 30th, with the exception of students who are enrolling in the District for the first time, no School Choice applications will be approved for the current school year
- Approvals are subject to capacity and class-size restrictions
- Once Out-of-Zone applications have been approved, School Choice applications submitted during the priority window shall be considered for the lottery, pending any remaining space available
- Transportation is not provided by the District
Family Empowerment Scholarship (FES formerly known as McKay) is a State of Florida School Choice program for students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or an approved medical diagnosis.
- Parents or legal guardians seeking to enroll in the Family Empowerment Scholarship, private school option must apply online (click here)

- Students with disabilities not able to be accommodated at their zoned school will be placed at a school with availability to accommodate by the Department of Exceptional Student Education after evaluation.
- Students with disabilities able to be accommodated at their zoned school but prefer to attend an out of zone school will be considered as a School Choice and will be subjected to school choice policies.

WHAT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED FOR A REQUEST TO BE CONSIDERED COMPLETE?

- Documentation of military orders required
If submitting an Out-of-Zone request due to a foster care placement:
- Documentation of foster care placement required
If submitting an Out-of-Zone request due to a court-ordered change in custody:
- Documentation of court-ordered required
If submitting an Out-of-Zone request due supervision:
- Work schedule(s) for parent(s), and/or
- Child care verification on provider's letterhead
If submitting an Out-of-Zone request due to a move into that zone:
- New construction: a fully executed building contract with estimated completion date
- Purchase: a fully executed purchasing contract with estimated completion date
- New lease: a fully executed lease agreement
- Temporary move: a fully executed contract with estimated completion date
If submitting an Out-of-Zone request due to a medical recommendation:
- Medical Packet signed by doctor

HOW MANY SCHOOLS MAY I SELECT?
Posted by:Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to select three (3) schools in an attempt to accommodate requests.

IS A NEW APPLICATION REQUIRED WHEN STUDENTS CHANGE LEVELS?
Posted by:Yes. A new application is required when students change levels. No expectations should be made for acceptance into feeder pattern schools.

WHAT IS HOUSE BILL 7029?
Posted by:What are some key points in House Bill 7029?
- Preferential treatment shall be given to:
- Dependent children of active duty military personnel whose move resulted from military orders
- Children who have been relocated due to a foster care placement in a different school zone
- Children who move due to a court-ordered change in custody due to separation or divorce, or the serious illness or death of a custodial parent
- Students residing in the District
- Identify schools which have not reached capacity and post on the District’s website
- Once approved:
- students may remain at the school chosen until the highest grade at that level
- parents will no longer be required to reapply each year (until a change in level occurs, ie., elementary to middle, or middle to high)
- students are permitted to participate in athletics unless they participated in the sport at another school during that year (exceptions are made for students who moved because of military, foster care, or court-ordered change in custody).
- students may remain at the school chosen until the highest grade at that level
- Preferential treatment shall be given to:
