What is the Autism endorsement program?
The Endorsement in Autism prepares professionals to teach learners diagnosed as experiencing autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Who may want to add the ASD Endorsement?Teachers with autism students on their caseload or in their class who are identified as an eligible student with an autism spectrum disorder (either as a primary or a secondary exceptionality) will need to be certified in an ESE area and can add the ASD endorsement.
What is required to get the Autism Endorsement?A bachelor’s or higher degree with certification in any exceptional student education area; and twelve semester hours to include:
- Nature of Autism Spectrum Disorders (to include student characteristics, appropriate learning goals, teaching approaches, environmental arrangements, etc.);
- Use of assistive and instructional technology and natural, alternative and augmentative communication systems for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders;
- Behavior management and positive behavior supports for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders;
- Assessment and diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and
- Field-based experience with students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Is there a test that a teacher can take to add the ASD endorsement to their certificate?
No. There is no test available to add the ASD endorsement.
I completed the ASD endorsement classes at a University, how do I get credit for these courses?
